Unlimited Working Hours for International Students Subject to Conditions

Beginning on November 15, 2022, Canada will temporarily lift the cap on the number of hours eligible study permit holders can work per week.

Currently, study permit holders who maintain full-time studies are eligible to work part-time off campus, to a maximum of twenty (20) hours per week. In response to Canada’s current labour shortage, this cap will be temporarily lifted. Full time post-secondary students, who are eligible to work off campus, will no longer be limited in the number of hours worked per week.

This measure is only temporary in nature, and will last from November 15, 2022 until December 31, 2023.

Study permit holders who seek to benefit from this policy must keep in mind a few important details:

  1. Students must ensure they have authorization to work printed on their student permit;
  2. Study permit holders must maintain full-time student status in order to work off-campus;
  3. Work that is performed while studying full-time cannot count toward Canadian work experience for the purpose of permanent residence in the future.
