Expanded Work Permit Eligibility for Spouses of Québec Skilled Worker Applicants
IRCC has expanded a temporary public policy aimed at supporting families of foreign workers in Québec as they pursue permanent residence. The measure allows eligible spouses and common-law partners of certain temporary foreign workers to apply for an open work permit, helping families remain together while contributing to Québec’s labour market.
To qualify, the principal applicant must have been found eligible under the public policy and have submitted a permanent selection application under Québec’s Skilled Worker Selection Program. The spouse or common-law partner must also be included in the principal applicant’s permanent selection application and hold valid temporary resident status in Canada or have had their status expire within the previous 90 days.
The temporary measure will remain in effect until the end of 2026 and provides additional flexibility for families navigating the transition from temporary status to permanent residence. Applicants should carefully review eligibility requirements and ensure that all applications are properly prepared to avoid delays or interruptions in their ability to work in Canada.
