Canada Extends Public Policy Supporting Ukrainian Nationals
Canada has extended the public policy providing access to open work permits and study permits for Ukrainian nationals and their family members who arrived under the Canada–Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). Effective April 1, 2025, those who applied for or held CUAET status as of that date, and who are in Canada with valid temporary resident status, will be eligible to apply for a new open work permit, an extension of an existing work permit, or a new study permit. These permits may be issued for up to three years, and applicants will be subject to standard processing fees.
The policy will remain in effect until March 31, 2026, ensuring continued access to work and education opportunities for Ukrainians while the conflict in their home country continues.
Nearly 300,000 individuals arrived in Canada under the CUAET since its launch in March 2022. This extension reflects Canada’s ongoing commitment to supporting Ukrainians who have sought refuge here, providing them with pathways to maintain stability through employment and education as they await a return to peace and security in Ukraine.
