Canada Extends Special Measures for Iranian Nationals until 2026

Although the violent protests in Iran that began in September 2022 have subsided, the Government of Canada has extended special measures designed to assist individuals who may be unable to return to Iran due to ongoing instability. These measures, first introduced in February 2023, are now extended and will remain in effect from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026.

The policy provides support for Iranian nationals in Canada who are temporary residents, allowing eligible individuals to apply for study permits, open work permits, and work permit extensions from within Canada. To qualify, applicants must be Iranian nationals with valid temporary resident status who arrived in Canada on or before February 28, 2025.
