Canada Launches ReportIn App for Immigration Monitoring

The Canadian government has launched ReportIn, a mobile app to assist in monitoring individuals under immigration enforcement. Introduced on November 13, 2024, the app allows foreign nationals, refugee claimants and permanent residents to meet reporting requirements without in-person visits to Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) offices.

Using advanced facial recognition and geolocation technology, ReportIn verifies users’ identities and locations during scheduled reporting times. This innovation offers an alternative to detention for individuals under immigration enforcement.

Responding to concerns about potential misuse of biometric data and privacy violations, CBSA has confirmed that the app records users’ locations only during reporting sessions and assures that the app is not intended for continuous tracking or automated decision-making. In addition, all reporting activities will remain under human oversight to ensure accountability and transparency.

While the app marks a significant step in modernizing immigration monitoring, privacy advocates continue to raise questions about safeguards against data misuse. CBSA has committed to addressing these concerns and maintain strong protections for users’ sensitive information.
