United Kingdom Joins CPTPP: New Immigration Opportunities for UK Nationals

The United Kingdom officially joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) on September 1, 2026, expanding the agreement to include the UK.

For Canadian immigration purposes, this is a notable development for UK citizens and businesses seeking to work, invest, or establish commercial activities in Canada. Canada’s immigration instructions have now been updated to reflect the UK’s participation in the agreement, including the temporary-entry provisions that apply to eligible business visitors, professionals, intra-company transferees, investors and other categories covered by the CPTPP.

The changes provide an additional framework for certain UK nationals seeking temporary entry to Canada for business or professional purposes. Eligibility, however, depends on the specific category and the requirements that apply to the individual and their proposed activities in Canada.

For employers and UK-based businesses considering Canadian operations, the UK’s inclusion in the CPTPP is therefore worth keeping in mind when assessing potential immigration pathways for employees and business personnel.

As the updated CPTPP provisions take effect, UK nationals and Canadian employers should consider whether these new treaty-based options may complement existing Canadian work permit and business immigration pathways.
