Lena Diab Appointed as Canada’s New Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
The honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Member of Parliament for Halifax West, has been appointed as Canada’s new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, succeeding Rachel Bendayan. This is a notable appointment, as Minister Diab brings both significant political experience and a personal connection to the immigrant experience.
Born in Halifax to Lebanese immigrant parents, Diab spent part of her childhood in Lebanon before returning to Canada during the Lebanese Civil War.
Previously, she served as Nova Scotia’s Minister of Immigration from 2013 to 2021, where she played a key role in shaping provincial immigration policy. In addition to professional experience as a lawyer and former small business owner, she also made history as the first woman to serve as Nova Scotia’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice.
