Canada Expands Support for Individuals Affected by Sudan Conflict

In response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Sudan, Canada has announced expanded measures to support those affected by the conflict. On February 20, 2025, the Canadian government outlined plans to resettle more refugees and broaden the family-based permanent residence pathway for impacted individuals.

Key initiatives include:

  • Increased Refugee Resettlement: Canada will welcome up to 4,000 Sudanese government-assisted refugees by the end of 2026 and support an additional 700 Sudanese refugees through private sponsorship.
  • Expanded Family-Based Permanent Residence Pathway: The number of applications accepted will rise from 3,250 to over 5,000, potentially reuniting approximately 10,000 individuals with their families in Canada. Notably, the requirement for the Canadian sponsor to reside outside Quebec has been removed.
  • Extension of Fee Waivers: The temporary public policy granting fee waivers for open work permits, study permits, and temporary resident permits to eligible individuals has been extended until October 27, 2025. This applies to family members who fled Sudan on or after April 15, 2023, and entered Canada before July 15, 2023. Eligible individuals who choose to apply for permanent residence under the family class may also benefit from this waiver.

These measures reaffirm Canada’s commitment to providing refuge and support to those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. As the situation continues to evolve, Canada remains dedicated to offering safe pathways for Sudanese nationals seeking stability and reunification with their loved ones.
