Immigration Options for Health Care Workers
Canada’s healthcare system is experiencing a significant labour shortage driven by an aging population, rising service demand, and a large segment of the workforce approaching retirement. More than 420,000 healthcare workers are over age 55, and immigrants already play a substantial role in the sector. To address these critical gaps, Canada has introduced several targeted immigration initiatives, including Express Entry category-based selection draws for healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, dentists, physiotherapists, and optometrists. The Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot is another good option that enables skilled refugees and displaced persons to immigrate using their healthcare training. To enable integration in the workforce, the government has made significant federal investments to the Foreign Credential Recognition Program to support credential assessment, work placements, wage subsidies, and mentorship for internationally educated health professionals, helping them integrate more efficiently into the Canadian workforce.
