Canada Issues Third STEM Draw Under Express Entry Category Based Selection

This week, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) issued two new rounds of invitations to apply to Express Entry.

On April 10, 2024, IRCC issued a general round of invitations to apply for permanent residence. Invitations were issued to candidates who qualify for selection under all Express Entry programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades and Canadian Experience Class, and in all occupation classifications. This draw invited 1,280 candidates to apply, and the minimum score required for selection was 549 points.

On April 11, 2024, IRCC issued a round of category-based selection invitations to candidates with experience in selected STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) occupations. This is the third STEM draw since the introduction of category-based selection in June 2023. This draw invited 4,500 candidates to apply, and the minimum score required for selection was 491 points.

To be eligible for selection, candidates must have a minimum of six months of experience in a designated STEM occupation. Twenty-four occupations were targeted including but not limited to: data scientists; cybersecurity specialists; architects; engineering managers; software engineers; web developers and programmers; civil engineers; and electrical engineers among others. Invitations were issued to candidates who qualify for selection under all Express Entry programs, including the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades and Canadian Experience Class.

IRCC continues to target Express Entry candidates in selected healthcare, STEM, trade, transport and agriculture occupations, as well as French-speaking candidates.
