Minister Sean Fraser Hints at New Programs

Speaking to the Canadian Bar Association’s Immigration Law Conference on June 2, 2023, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada Sean Fraser discussed some upcoming changes to Canadian Immigration Law.

In recognizing that an estimated 500,000 people live in Canada without immigration status, Minister Fraser is working on a policy to allow for the regularization of status for some out of status individuals. Further details are forthcoming, but it is hopeful to hear that the Canadian Government is working on a solution.

In addition, Minister Fraser will soon be announcing policy changes for individuals in Canada wishing to study while holding work permits.

Finally, the current occupation-based Express Entry draws will continue until the end of the year, providing applicants certainty regarding the targeted occupations. The next stage will be the implementation of regional draws.

While none of these policies have been formally announced, they provide an opportunity to consider what the future of Canadian immigration will look like.
